Pre-Conference Day Events

Before the 2025 Global Investigative Journalism Conference officially kicks off, GIJC25 will host a focused day of high-impact workshops and special gatherings led by top investigative journalists and editors from around the world. These sessions are by invitation only and have limited capacity. For select workshops, registered conference attendees with relevant experience may register their interest — organizers may reach out if your background fits the intended audience and there are slots available.

The Pre-Conference Day takes place on Thursday, November 20, on the 4th floor of the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) – the main conference venue. Sessions begin at 9am or 10am and will conclude in time for the Welcome Reception at 6pm.

The Investigative Agenda for Technology Journalism

Thursday, November 20th, 9:00-16:00

From government surveillance to disinformation and algorithmic accountability, this full-day workshop brings together leading technology journalists, editors, and investigative networks to tackle the field’s most pressing themes. Participants will explore how to report deeply on recurring tech-related issues, share investigative methods, and discuss ways to increase collaboration and impact across borders; while also exploring how journalists can ethically leverage the latest technologies to hold powers to account.

Investigating Global Health

Thursday, November 20th, 9:00 -16:00

Hosted by The Examination, a nonprofit newsroom that investigates global health threats

Explore how to hold powerful interests accountable in the global health arena – with a focus on investigating the key industries that drive the most preventable deaths worldwide. This day-long training event includes interactive workshops, cross-disciplinary panels, practical case studies, and networking opportunities to build a more diverse community of investigative health reporters.

CTRL+J International

Wednesday, November 19th, 9:00-18:00

CTRL+J is a series of conversations launched in 2025 to bring together key voices from the Global South to examine challenges and homegrown solutions to sustain journalism amid technological upheaval. Building on regional events in São Paulo, Jakarta and Johannesburg, CTRL+J International will convene journalists, technologists, researchers, civil society leaders and policymakers to share insights across regions and develop a collective agenda for cross-border collaboration, advocacy and product development.

GFMD Steering Committee meeting

20th November 2025 – 10:00–17:00

This meeting will bring together the outgoing and newly-elected Steering Committee of the Global Forum for Media Development. Every four years GFMD members elect a representative cohort of 17 delegates who are responsible for major strategic and policy matters, GFMD memberships issues, and oversee the work of the GFMD Secretariat. A new GFMD Chairperson, Deputy Chairperson and Treasurer will be elected at the meeting to serve from 2025 to 2029.
