Mary Fitzgerald is Executive Director of CommsHub, a new fund hosted by the Meliore Foundation aimed at developing innovative, scaled and impactful strategic communications for the climate movement.
She had worked across media, culture and technology for two decades. As a Director of Programs at the Open Society Foundations, she led OSF's global programming and strategy on media, culture and art and tech policy. Before that, as editor-in-chief and CEO of the global news outlet openDemocracy, she built an award-winning team of journalists and oversaw major growth in the organization’s global reach and impact, establishing an investigative journalism unit and leading high-impact campaigns to strengthen journalism and force transparency from governments and corporations. She has also worked at the global organization Avaaz, and as a senior editor of Prospect magazine in London. Her writing has appeared in the New York Times, FT, Guardian, New York Review of Books, Prospect and elsewhere.
She currently sits on the Avaaz global board and on the Prospect editorial board, and is completing a strategy consultancy with the Thomson Reuters Foundation. She has also served as a trustee for the human rights charity Reprieve, and on the editorial code committee of Impress, the U.K. press regulator.
