Jonathan Soma is the Knight Chair in Data Journalism at Columbia University, where he serves as Director of the Data Journalism MS program and the Lede Program, an intensive data journalism summer course. His lectures cover everything from basic Python and data analysis to interactive visualization and artificial intelligence, with a focus on making unapproachable concepts accessible. Recent projects include Natural PDF – an AI-native, spatially-aware PDF processing library – and Bad PDFs, a gallery of awful FOIA responses with workflows and techniques for extracting data from them. Lately he's been giving workshops on AI-powered image and video analysis and automated evaluation methods for AI products. His current focus is on helping under-resourced newsrooms make responsible, ethical use of artificial intelligence.
