Irma Garnesia is a media and communication researcher for the Indonesian Data Journalism Network (IDJN), based in Jakarta, Indonesia. Her research is focusing on the intersections of journalism, politics, and information ecosystems in Southeast Asia. Her work spans collaborations with institutions such as BBC Media Action, EngageMedia, the Australian National University, and ISEAS–Yusof Ishak Institute. She has published on topics such as the political economy of fact-checking in Indonesia, the political discourse of misinformation, and the danger of unregulated technology. She has presented at the International Associations of Media and Communication Research (IAMCR) and her current project examine how journalists are covering sensitive environmental coverage amid political threats and capture as well as how alternative media rethinking its journalistic role amid AI disruptions and volatile political economy.
