About
Sarah is a journalist and researcher at Leipzig University's Institute for Remote Sensing and Earth System Science. Her work explores how scientific methods make their way into journalism, as investigative and environmental reporting increasingly demand technical expertise to interrogate Earth observation data gathered by satellites.
As a senior data journalist at the BBC, Sarah reported on the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Mahsa Amini protests in Iran, and COVID-19's impact on the global food supply. She was the 2020 GNI fellow at the Financial Times. Sarah followed her data-driven reporting on COVID-19 into academic research, using unsupervised machine learning to understand the pandemic's impact in Europe and around the world.
