Mathias-Felipe de-Lima-Santos (PhD) is a journalist, technologist, and researcher currently based in Australia. He is an assistant professor at the University of New South Wales, Australia as well as a researcher in the Digital Media and Society Observatory (DMSO) at the Federal University of São Paulo (Brazil) and in the Political Communication, Journalism and Democracy Research Group (POLCOM-GRP) at Pompeu Fabra University (Spain). He also serves as tech lead for the award-winning project, Amazon Underworld. As a Senior Researcher with extensive experience in international projects on AI, media, and democracy, he has contributed to EU-funded initiatives such as AI4Media and JOLT, as well as projects with Google, Al Jazeera, Avaaz, ICFJ, and Internews. In 2024, he was recognized by newspaper The Australian and The Australian Academy of the Humanities as a rising star in the field of Communication and Cultural Studies. Mathias Felipe has consistently bridged the gap between academia and real-world impact, with his research cited by policymakers and civil society organizations. He has also won prestigious awards for his work with industry partners, including ONA and Gabo. Mathias-Felipe is the co-editor of two books: “Journalism, Data and Technology in Latin America” and “Fact-Checking in the Global South” (Palgrave Macmillan).
