Gunel Safarova

Gunel Safarova is a media professional with nearly 15 years of experience in journalism and media development, specialising in writing, video journalism, documentary filmmaking, and in-depth news reporting. She also has expertise in media management, strategic communications, and research. From 2015 to 2021, Safarova worked with the BBC World Service in Azerbaijan as a field reporter, multimedia journalist, and video producer. Today, she leads Abzas Media as an Acting Director and Editor-in-Chief - one of the few independent investigative media outlets from Azerbaijan, now operating in exile. As a native Azerbaijani speaker, fluent in Turkish, Russian, and English, she is passionate about advancing independent journalism and supporting resilient media ecosystems.
